Appassionata da sempre dalla velocità, inizia da giovanissima a guidare.
Alla tenera età di 9 anni prende per mano un volante e da lì non lo ha più lasciato.

A 18 inizia a lavorare nella piccola attività di famiglia, guidando un furgone lungo la Riviera Ligure per il trasporto della carne.

Dopo un debutto con i kart, nel 1965 gareggia per la prima volta nella serie della Formula Monza. Dopo questa prima corsa importante, partecipa a molte competizioni minori distinguendosi per grinta e talento.

Nel 1970 vinse il titolo di campione italiano della Formula 850 aggiudicandosi, su una Biraghi, quattro delle dieci gare previste; nella categoria vincerà anche due gare l'anno successivo.

Nel 1971 nuovo titolo: quello inglese della Formula Ford Mexico. Nel 1974, al volante di una Lola T 330 Chevrolet si classificò, grazie ad una grande regolarità di risultati nei 18 appuntamenti previsti dal calendario, al quinto posto della classifica finale nel Rothmans F5000 Championship

Lella Lombardi esordì in Formula 1 nel 1974 nel Gran Premio di Gran Bretagna, sul circuito di Brands Hatch. All’epoca guidava una Brabham BT42 motorizzata Ford Cosworth DFV con la quale raggiunse in prova il 29º tempo, purtroppo non sufficiente per qualificarsi alla partecipazione in gara. L'anno successivo prese parte a dodici delle quattordici gare del mondiale guidando a inizio anno una March 741 della March Engineering e proseguendo con una March 751 del team Lavazza March.

Tra il 1975 e il 1981 Lella Lombardi partecipa a moltissime competizioni della categoria World Sportscar Championship, ottenendo buoni risultati. Esordì al volante di una Lola T 284 Ford Gr. S.3, e nell'anno successivo partecipò a cinque delle nove prove previste dal calendario, oltre che alla 24 Ore di Le Mans, correndo sempre in coppia con la francese Marie-Claude Beaumont al volante di una Alpine-Renault A441 nel Gruppo S.2

Durante uno dei Gran Premi più travagliati nella storia della Formula 1, il 27 aprile 1975 sul circuito del Montjuic a Barcellona, per la prima volta, e tutt’oggi unica donna a riuscirci, Lella Lombardi ottenne punti iridati guadagnando mezzo punto grazie ad un sesto posto nella classifica finale della gara

Dopo aver partecipato ad altri Gran Premi, conclude la sua carriera in Formula 1 classificandosi 12ma nel Gran Premio di Austria nel 1976.

Nel 1988 si ritira come pilota dalle gare automobilistiche ma desidera rimanere a lavorare nel settore che ama. Decide di fondare la scuderia Lombardi Autosport, nella quale ricopre il ruolo di Team Manager.
